The Beginning

Updated: Mar 11

As I sit here drinking my coffee and contemplating this crazy roller coaster ride journey of life. I have decided to start a blog to share my journey and recipes with anyone willing to read. I will start by sharing the meaning behind the business name. I started baking with a recipe my step-mother Nancy had given me. Her recipe was for an traditional cheesecake that could be easily converted to an Oreo cheesecake. I wanted to alter it to be a fruity cheesecake and so I filled it with blueberries and topped it with lemon curd. My daughter is lactose intolerant and my son was/is not keen on trying my bakes 🤨.... (I'm still not entirely sure I brought home the right baby) so I took that cheesecake to work with me so I that I wouldn't eat an entire cheesecake. 😅

Everyone liked it so much that a coworker asked me if I would make one for her upcoming birthday. I agreed and it all started from there.

My first cheesecakes I sold cost me just as much to make as the amount I sold them for.

It wasn't a smart business plan but I was thoroughly enjoying the process and the creative outlet this facilitated. Soon after

Jeremy Ashby, the head chef at Azur Restaurant and Patio tried and also loved the cheesecake he asked if I would sell a couple of cheesecakes to the restaurant each week.

I decided to do so and work on my technique and pricing strategies. At this time I decided out of a Google search and vote by co-workers to name my business "Sugar Mama's"

Fast forward a few years and I am still having a great time baking, experimenting with flavors, and producing excellent allergen free products as I have become gluten intolerant.

I decided to take the steps to LLC and insure my business and came to find out that business name and 5 other similar versions were registered in the state of KY. I had no choice but to rebrand.

At this particular time my second mother (step-mom of more than 30 years) Nancy was hospitalized and passed away from complications due to the Covid virus. She was an amazing lady and an inspiration to me as a woman, mother, and human being. All of the grandkids called her Nanny B. So was born Nanny Bee's Bakery.

She taught me a lot of things during her life here. I attended a high school in Harrodsburg KY where she and my dad bought a potterty and crafts store. We lived upstairs and we were all learning how to tap into the entrepenual spirit if it ever called to us. We were taught how to make wreaths, candles, and run a pre-historic cash register from 40 B.C.
